The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has stated the real reason behind his frequent presence at church events across the nation.

He said his attendance of church events is not a political strategy, but it’s because beyond needing a sound leader, the country needs prayers.

According to him, Nigeria does not only needs an agile, healthy, and visionary leader, it also needs prayers.

Naija News gathered that Obi stated this on Tuesday during another visit to the former prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria and a former president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) His Eminence Dr Sunday Mbang at his residence in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

Obi’s clarification follows criticism from different quarters including opposing political parties and their loyalists mocking him for seeking votes in church and nothing more.

The Labour Party flag bearer has however debunked such claims saying his only reason is because Nigeria needs prayers.

Obi appealed to religious leaders in the country to speak truth to power as the church is not left out of the country’s challenges, citing the kidnapping of priests in the North Central and North West regions.

In response, the former CAN president told him that he believes that Nigeria needs to be set on a new path by an agile and healthy leader who will work for the people and not members of a cabal or his political party.

Mbang, who bemoaned the current poverty situation and insecurity ravaging the country told Obi to keep to his promises if he is elected at the polls next year.

The clergyman said if he doesn’t keep to his promise if he gets elected, history will be unkind to him because millions of Nigerians see him as the last hope to rescue the country.
