Following an attack by gunmen at a police checkpoint in Anambra State, many people have been feared dead.

Naija News understands that the incident has caused tension around the axis, as witnesses scampered for their lives.

An eye witness told the Nations that the incident, which occurred around 10:30 am between the Ihiala-Uli axis in Ihiala local government area, has left many injured.

The eye witness recounts that as commuters ran for their lives with gunmen shooting sporadically, security operatives removed their uniforms and took cover in nearby bushes and houses.

Commercial bus operators plying the route reportedly abandoned the Onitsha- Owerri expressway for fear of being killed.

A senior police officer of the state police command confirmed the attack to the publication.

The source said ”I’ve not heard of any death but I can tell you there were casualties during the gun battle”

The source added that Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng has dispatched a special squad to Ihiala to quell the situation.
