Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Friday 21st October 2022.

The PUNCH: Amid Nigeria’s fiscal crisis, the Federal Government is compiling the list of assets that will be either sold or ‘concessioned’ to fund the 2023 budget deficit of N10.7tn. Sources at the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning told The PUNCH that the government was considering selling or concessioning the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos as well as all the National Integrated Power Projects in Olorunsogo, Calabar II, Benin (located at Ihorbor), Omotosho II and Geregu II plants.

The Guardian: Barring any change in plans, Nigeria will have a new national carrier in December, though there are still concerns about its planned operating model and choice of technical partner. The new airline, already christened Nigeria Air, will begin domestic flight operations with three aircraft, leased from Ethiopia Airlines (ET), and operated by Ethiopian pilots and crew.

This Day: The end appears in sight for the perennial power outage in the country as the federal government is billed to take delivery of 22 power transformers and mobile stations from Germany between November this year and May next year. President Muhammadu Buhari gave an indication to this effect yesterday when he played host to officials of Siemens Energy AG at State House, Abuja.

Daily Trust: The Federal Government has appealed the judgment of the Court of Appeal which discharged and acquitted the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, of allegations of terrorism and treasonable felony. A three-member panel of justices led by Justice Jummai Hanatu Sankey had last week struck out the remaining seven-count charges preferred against Kanu by the government, citing a violation of international law on his extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

Thank you for reading, that is all for today, see you again tomorrow for a review of Nigerian newspapers.
