The PUNCH: As the battle against insecurity continues, the Federal Government has earmarked N1.35tn to prosecute the ongoing anti-insurgency fight in the country. This was contained in the N20.51tn 2023 budget proposal presented to the National Assembly by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday.
The Guardian: Today is World Mental Health Day (WMHD) and psychiatrists have raised the alarm that one in four Nigerians, that is over 50 million Nigerians, are suffering from one mental disorder or the other. Also, they said about 75 percent of those who need mental health care do not have access to it, as Nigeria has only 300 psychiatrists to treat about 200 million people, adding that Africa has one psychiatrist for every 500,000 inhabitants, which is 100 times less than the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recommendation.
This Day: Contrary to the widespread perception that the north is not strong in business, there is a new crop of business leaders ready to replace the likes of Aliko Dangote and Abdulsamad Rabiu, who are doing well in various sectors across the economy. They are excelling, innovative, and ambitious. Either in terms of personal development or collective contributions to the larger economy, the north has in recent years doubled its stripes, and it is determined to level up with the rest of the country, nay the world. This, of course, is evident in the number of leaders – business and political – it has since raised as proof of this deliberate choice.
The Nation: Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, his Oyo and Benue states counterparts – Seyi Makinde and Samuel Ortom – are to boycott the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign launch today in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital, it was learnt yesterday. The three aggrieved governors had similarly boycotted the inauguration of the campaign council at the Conference Centre, Abuja on September 28 along with their two colleagues – Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikepeazu (Abia).
Daily Trust: Dozens of airlines that operated both scheduled and non-scheduled flight services have gone moribund since 1960 when Nigeria attained independence from the British colonialists, Daily Trust checks have revealed. As the country marks its 62nd anniversary, our findings show that no fewer than 62 airlines at different times in Nigeria’s aviation history have become extinct.
