Super Eagles: Defender Mutes Critics With First Goal

Ajax defeated Volendam 4-2 away in the Dutch league on Saturday, with Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey scoring his first goal for the team.

The 22-year-old defender joined the Eredivisie side from Rangers last summer for the fee of 19 million pounds.

Ajax captain Dusan Tadic had given them the lead on 17 minutes from the penalty spot when Bassey extended the lead to make it 2-0.

Bassey last scored in a 4-0 victory over Falkirk in the Scottish League Cup on November 10, 2020, while playing for Rangers.

Naija News earlier reported the thrashing of the Dutch team in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, where the Eredivisie champions suffered a 6-1 home defeat to Napoli.

The victory over FC Volendam ended Ajax’s streak of three defeats and a draw.

After nine league games, Ajax is back in first place with 22 points after beating Volendam. However, if AZ Alkmaar defeats Utrecht on Sunday, the reigning champions will relegate to second place.
