Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Saturday, 16th July, 2022.

The PUNCH: In continuation of the illegal practice of vote-buying that has characterised elections in the country, many political parties participating in today’s governorship election in Osun State have devised new strategies to induce voters, findings by Saturday PUNCH revealed.

The Guardian: As the electorate in Osun State file out today to elect a new governor, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has urged its officials, ad-hoc and regular staff to resist unethical behaviour during the exercise.

The Nation: No fewer than one million nine hundred thousand voters across the 30 local government areas of Osun State are expected to file out today to elect the state governor for the next four years. Security has already been beefed up in all parts of the state with 6am to 4pm restriction placed on movement of vehicles.

This Day: After weeks of acrimonious campaigns, the people of Osun State will today decide whether Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should continue for another four years or elect a new man to succeed him.Fifteen political parties are fielding candidates for today’s election, but it is evidently a straight fight between Oyetola and Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Daily Trust: As the people of Osun elect a new governor for the next four years, there is a heavy deployment of security operatives in major towns of the state. Not less than 1,955,657 registered voters are expected to exercise their franchise across the 3,763 polling units. Meanwhile, residents have vowed to collect greedy politicians’ money and still vote for their candidates.
