Court Picks Fresh Date To Decide On Extradition Of Abba Kyari To The US

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has picked a new date to hear a suit seeking to prevent the federal government of Nigeria from extraditing suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari to the United States for trial.

The court took the decision after all parties to the case failed to show up on Monday, April 4.

The presiding judge, Justice Donatus Okorowo shifted the trial to June 14, 2022, after initially threatening to throw out the case due to lack of representation.

He ordered that the service of hearing be served on all the parties.

Naija News reports the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/854/2021 has the Nigeria Police Force, and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN listed as defendants.

A group, identified as the Incorporated Trustees of Northern Peace Foundation filed the suit to prevent Kyari’s extradition to the United States.

The embattled cop Abba Kyari, had been indicted by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in an international fraud case involving notorious fraudster, Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi.

He was later accused of involvement in an international drug trafficking syndicate by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Kyari, a former head of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Rapid Team (IRT) is presently in custody at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja based on the instruction of Justice Emeka Nwike of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
