The suspended former head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Inspector-General of Police, DCP Abba Kyari will have no less than twenty lawyers to defend him in the drug trafficking case levelled against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The team of lawyers will include four Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) as disclosed on Wednesday by a legal practitioner, Musa Shafiu on behalf of other lawyers in the team.

He said the legal team will represent Kyari in the case before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

“We should recall that DCP Abba Kyari, in a motion filed before Justice Inyang Ekwo of Federal High Court sitting in Abuja denied the allegation linking him to an international drug cartel by the NDLEA.

“He filed the motion to seek for the enforcement of his fundamental rights.

“He said he was ready to appear in court to answer any charge against him because the allegation upon which he was arrested and detained is a trump-up allegation without sufficient proof,” Shafiu said.

On why they have decided to represent the embattled super cop, Shafiu told newsmen that Kyari distinguished himself as a police officer who served his country diligently and brought many criminals to justice.

He added that his good works far outweigh the charges against him.

His “good work and dedication to the country is far more than his shortcoming,” the lawyer declared.

It will be recalled that the NDLEA on Monday, 7th February arraigned Kyari, and six others over drug trafficking-related offences.

Naija News reports that the NDLEA had filed eight counts of hard drugs trafficking against Mr Kyari, who is also wanted in the United States for his relationship with the convicted fraudster, Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abass.
