The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has kept mum over the death of the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Force Criminal Investigations Department, Joseph Egbunike.

Naija News earlier reported that Egbunike, who was appointed by the IGP to probe embattled police officer, Abba Kyari, over money laundering allegations, slumped and died.

It was gathered that Egbunike fell sick at the weekend and on Tuesday went for a medical check-up after which he was given drugs and discharged.

The senior police officer slumped and died in his office in Abuja in the late hours of Tuesday and was rushed to the National Hospital in Abuja where he was confirmed dead.

According to reports, the deceased’s family and police officers have gathered at his official residence in Maitama in preparation for his burial.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue a statement on the death of the senior police officer.

Egbunike, who hails from Onitsha in Anambra State, had worked for several years as the head of the police finance department before his appointment as DIG in 2020.

In 2021, he was appointed to head the Special Investigation Panel to investigate the alleged involvement of Kyari in a $1.1million internet fraud committed by Ramon Abbas also known as Hushpuppi.

In a report submitted to the police chief, the late police officer and his panel had worked to give Kyari a soft landing.

Egbunike had recommended the demotion of Kyari instead of an outright dismissal.
