The House of Representatives on Tuesday, called for the immediate suspension of the Special Works Scheme of the Federal Government.

The recruitment process of 774,000 workers for the scheme for a while has seen the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment clash.

The House during plenary directed the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning not to fund the scheme, which is expected to take off in January 2021.

The National Assembly had appropriated N52bn for the exercise in the 2020 Appropriation Act.

The House also condemned the removal of the Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment, Dr Nasiru Argungu.

President Muhammadu Buhari was called on by the House to reverse the removal of Argungu.

The Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, had since appointed Argungu’s replacement in the order of the President.

The Federal Government, however, on Sunday, announced that the 774,000 Special Public Works (SPW) project will start on January 5, 2021.

The development was disclosed by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo
