An officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Delta State Command and a truck driver landed on a hospital bed following an attempt by the officer of the Nigeria paramilitary agency to arrest the driver.

According to reports, the FRSC officer, Mr C. U. Mgbede was beaten to a pulp by an angry mob who descended on him for forcefully sending out the driver out of the moving truck and almost took his life.

Naija News understands that the Thursday, August 27 event almost claimed the FRSC officer’s life until a rescue team came for him. It was reported that the officer had jumped into the truck in a commando-style and reportedly forced down the truck driver after efforts to take over the steering failed on the Benin-Asaba Expressway, Asaba.

Eyewitnesses confirmed to a reporter with the PUNCH that the driver landed on the paved road and was gasping for breath, which attracted the mob, who pounced on the officer.

However, the FRSC response team reportedly arrived the scene of the incident and evacuated both the truck driver and Mgbede to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba for proper treatments.

On his part when contacted on the incident, the FRSC Sector Commander, Delta State, Mr Alphonsus Godwin, denied that the officer pushed the driver out of the truck as speculated.

He said, “The man was asked to stop at the checkpoint because he was not using the seatbelt; rather than stopping, he moved ahead and the marshal jumped into the vehicle and took control of the steering wheel.

“He stopped the vehicle immediately and was trying to impound the vehicle when the mob stormed the scene and beat the officer to a pulp.”

He added, “Before our response team got to the scene, the mob had brutalised the officer; our men carried the two of them, who were laying on the ground, to the FMC, Asaba. This is one of the challenges we are facing on the job when vehicle owners try to resist arrest.”

Meanwhile, a 25-year-old medical doctor has reportedly committed suicide in Niger State.
