Breaking: President Donald Trump Impeached

Published

on

Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has been impeached by the United States House of Representatives for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Naija News reports that Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives at exactly 8:23 pm Eastern Time on Wednesday following a fierce debate and vote on two articles of impeachment against him after weeks of testimony related to his dealings with Ukraine.

This online news platform understands that the House voted 230-197 to impeach Trump for abusing his power in his dealings with Ukraine and voted 229-198 for obstruction of justice. Both articles of impeachment were passed.

House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, who kicked off formal impeachment debate on Wednesday, in a lengthy speech called impeachment “one of the most solemn powers this body can take.”

“No member, regardless of political or party, comes to Congress to impeach a president,” said Pelosi.

Speaker Pelosi noted that Trump had pursued an “improper personal benefit” at “the expense of our national security,” which “gave us no choice” but to impeach.

“If we do not act now, we would be derelict in our duties,” Pelosi added.

Naija News reports that the now impeached American President was alleged to have blocked the payment of a congressionally mandated $400 million military aid package to obtain quid pro quo cooperation from, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky. He later released the aid package.

The US President was accused to have pressured Ukrainian President to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter over Hunter’s involvement with the Ukrainian natural-gas company Burisma Holdings.

President Trump also reportedly asked President Zelensky to look into the conspiracy theory alleging Ukrainian interference in the 2016 United States election.

However, the US President denied wrongdoing, noting that his interest in launching the investigations was legitimate because he wanted to eradicate corruption. He described the impeachment inquiry as “sham” and “hoax”.

Before his impeachment on Wednesday, December 18, Trump again denied any wrongdoing, tweeting: “I DID NOTHING WRONG”

“Can you believe that I will be impeached today by the Radical left, Do Nothing Democrats, AND I DID NOTHING WRONG! A terrible Thing. Read the transcripts. This should never happen to another President again. Say a PRAYER!”

Joe Biden Revokes Trump’s Immigrant Visa Ban

Published

on

United States President Joe Biden revoked former President Donald Trump’s order that limited the number of new work visas for temporary foreign workers in the US amid the coronavirus pandemic.

NAN reports that this was made known in the order provided by the White House on Wednesday.

“The suspension of entry imposed in Proclamation 10014… does not advance the interests of the United States.

“To the contrary, it harms the United States, including by preventing certain family members of United States citizens and lawful permanent residents from joining their families here,” Biden said.

Reacll that Trump had in June 2020 signed a proclamation that suspended certain categories of non-immigrant work visas as part of an effort to revive the U.S. economy amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The list includes H-1B visas for work in high-tech industries and a range of others for low-skill workers, interns, teachers, and company transfers.

Trump Appeals Facebook, Instagram Suspension

Published

Former United States President, Donald Trump has appealed his suspension by social media giant Facebook, both on Facebook and Instagram.

Recall that Facebook had suspended Trump indefinitely for breaching the social media platform rules.

The former president was also banned permanently from social media giant Twitter, owned by Jack Dorsey.

Trump appealed his ban to the Facebook Oversight Board, co-chaired by former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

Confirming the appeal, a spokesperson for the Oversight Board said in a statement that Trump’s appeal will not be considered, until about 10 weeks time.

She said: “We can confirm that a user statement has been received in the case before the Oversight Board concerning President Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts,”

“We have decided that we are going to take this case,’ Thorning-Schmidt said on Tuesday in an interview with UK’s Channel Four.

“It’s a very high profile case but that is exactly why the Oversight Board was created in the first place.”

She added that they are inviting public feedback on the case for them to look at and they have ‘already received public comments in the thousands and thousands’.

“One thing I think is quite good about how we deal with these things is not only does Facebook have a statement about why they did what they did. The user can also put in their statement about their opinion,” she said.

“A third thing that can happen is that we are open for public comments about this particular case. We’ve already received public comments in the thousands and thousands.”
