ASUU Warns Senate over plans to buy exotic cars

ASUU Issues Fresh Warning To Ruling Class

Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that Nigerians may be forced to react to the insensitivity of the political class to their plight.

The academic don spoke against the background of plans by Senators of the 9th National Assembly to spend over N5bn on the purchase of exotic cars for the lawmakers.

Naija News recalls recently, a former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu was beaten up in Germany by members of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB).

According to Prof. Ogunyemi, the move is insensitive in the light of the harsh economic situation currently facing Nigerians and the citizens of the country may be so pushed to pelt senators with stones for being insensitive to their plights.

He said this on Monday in an interview with journalists at the end of ASUU’s National Executive Council meeting which held at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.

He said, “They move about in armoured cars at a time when those who suffered in the rain and sun to put them in office are languishing in abject poverty.

“They are insensitive to the point that they are telling us they want to buy what they called exotic cars. It is provocative and by the time Nigerians become fully conscious, they will be stoned.

“A time will come that the rich would not be able to sleep when the poor are hungry, and that is what the Nigerian ruling class is not recognising.”

Meanwhile, the Senate through its spokesperson, Sen. Dayo Adeyeye has stated that there is nothing wrong or unconstitutional in its plans to purchase vehicles for use of the lawmakers.
