9th Anniversary: What Jonathan Said About Yar'Adua

Former Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has praised Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, a former president, who died in office 2010, nine years ago today.

Naija News recalls that Yar’Adua was the second civilian president under Nigeria’s current constitution after winning the 2007 Presidential election.

Yar’Adua, who led Nigeria for 3 years, died aged 58 in Saudi Arabia and was flown back for burial. The known cause of death was pericarditis, inflammation of a membrane around the heart.

Remembering the former President, Jonathan, the then vice-president, who completed Yar’Adua’s term and won a substantive term in 2011, took to the micro-blogging site, Twitter, on Sunday, May 5 to heap praises on the late Yar’Adua.

“On this day nine years ago I lost a friend, colleague, brother, and boss, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He was a selfless leader who placed national interest above personal and ethnic gains,” Jonathan tweeted.

“President Yar’Adua was a man of integrity with a humble spirit who always took upon himself the burden of national reconciliation, peace-building, and democratic consolidation.

“He used the opportunity he had in public service to build bridges of love, foster unity and give hope to Nigerians.

“Today, I remember and celebrate him for the works that he had done. Peace he lived for and homes of peace he built. Democracy he loved and democracy he nurtured. We will always remember you for your service. A servant leader truly you remain,” Jonathan wrote on Twitter.
