Residents of Okitipupa, in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Thursday attacked the senator representing the Ondo South Senatorial District, Yele Omogunwa.

The Senator was attacked by one of the six local governments that he is representing.

Omogunwa who is seeking another term in office under the All Progressives Congress was assaulted during the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo‘s visit to the palace of Jegun of Idepe, Oba Michael Adetoye.

The people that attacked the senator who was rescued by the security details of Osinbajo claimed that he neglected the district since he became a senator in 2015.

The angry youths described the performance and poor representation of Omogunwa in the past three years as disastrous which has affected the growth of the district, particularly the youths.

According to one of the youths, the senator who abandoned the district for the past three years angered the youths by coming to seek for the support ahead of the election.

“He (Senator Omogunwa) was beaten because he neglected us in the senatorial district, he carried out no constituency projects in the past three years we have elected him.

“He does not have any constituency office in this town, he was not accessible, we couldn’t reach him for over three years, so what does he want here? The election is coming now, so he wants to cajole us again, that will not be possible,” he added.

The media aide to the senator, Jide Omogunwa while reacting to the attack on the senator claimed that he was not assaulted.

He maintained that the venue was just rowdy when some youths were trying to ask the senator for money.

What happened was just a normal thing in politics.

“At the event, the youths came to ask for money. As he was trying to get them money, they thought he was trying to escape.

“Some of the youths were protecting him while some were pushing themselves. It doesn’t have any political undertone.

“It is a normal thing that can happen to politicians.”
