DSS To Pay N10m Damages For Shooting Wrong Boko Haram Suspect
The Department of State Services (DSS) has been ordered by a Federal High Court in Bauchi to pay the sum of N10 million as damages to Musa Ibrahim for shooting him on the lap in 2016.
The DSS operatives, according to the victim, stormed his residence on March 2, 2016 in the midnight at Iyamadu street, Bukuru in Jos South local government area of Plateau State, and asked whether he was the Boko Haram member, Umar Khalid Muhammed, they were looking for.
He said when he denied, he was shot on his lap.
The victim had sought for a declaration that the action by the security operatives as illegal as it violated his right to life and dignity of his human person as enshrined in Section 33 and 34 of the 1999 constitution as amended.
The presiding judge, Justice Muhammad Shitu Abubakar, therefore, on Friday awarded the sum of N10 million as damages against the respondents.
However, the court refused some of the applicant’s requests which include the publication of a public apology in two national dailies.
