The Niger Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, disclosed that it intercepted 163 contraband worth more than N200 million in 2017.

The Area Comptroller, Benjamin Binga, who revealed this in an interview in Minna on Monday, said the area command controls operations of NCS in Niger, Kogi and Kwara states.

According to Binga, some of the items seized included used vehicles, used tyres, rice, furniture and second hand clothes, among others.

Binga said NCS personnel had been deployed to illegal routes to arrest and prosecute smugglers, warning smugglers and the people harbouring them to shun the act of smuggling.

He added that the command would ensure that the activities of smugglers within the area of its operation are checked, adding that the security measures had been put in place to curtail smuggling in the area.

He therefore, appealed to relevant stakeholders, traditional rulers and religion leaders to mobilise their followers to assist the NCS with information on movements of smugglers.
