1. Atiku promises to rule Nigeria for a single term if elected President

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said that he would only spend one term in office as Nigeria’s president if elected come 2019.

He said this in reaction to fears that a new president from the North would do two-terms against the current arrangement of eight years turns between the North and the South.

2. Bandits kill four policemen in Kaduna

Four policemen were killed on Sunday in Jankasa Community in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State by yet to be identified gunmen.

The murdered officers who belonged to the Inspector General Police (IGP) Rapid Response Team were in the state to carry out a special operation in some areas where some suspected bandits are said to be camping.

3. PDP alleges fresh plans to arrest Saraki and Ekweremadu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Sunday, says it has uncovered a fresh plot to arrest Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.

The party also alleged that the budget of the electoral commission, INEC, sent to the National Assembly by the presidency last month, had been sent to the presidency by the electoral commission since February.

4. APC wins Bauchi-South senatorial bye-election

Mr. Lawan Gumau, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared victorious at the Saturday’s Bauchi South Senatorial District bye-election.

Prof. Ahmed Sarkin-Pagam, the Returning Officer, while announcing the result in Bauchi State on Saturday, said Gumau scored 119,489 votes to defeat eight other contestants, among them, the immediate past governor of the state, Mr. Isa Yuguda of the Green Party of Nigeria, who polled 33,079 votes.

5. Lagos light rail to start operation in 2022

The Lagos State Government has disclosed that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a French multinational, Alstom SA to complete the rail project.

The state government, thus, said the passenger operation of the first phase (Marina to Mile 2) of the 27-kilometre project might take off in 2022.

6. APC wins Kogi bye-election into House of Representatives

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Haruna Isah, has been declared winner of the Lokoja/Kogi House of Representatives by-election held on August 11.

The Returning Officer, Rotimi Ajayi, who announced the results on Sunday in Lokoja, said Mr Isah polled 26,860 votes to defeat Bashir Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 14, 845 votes.

7. Angry soldiers protest at Maiduguri airport

Reports last night, indicated there was tension at the Maiduguri international airport in Borno state as angry soldiers protested their deployment from the state capital to another local government.

The aggrieved soldiers reportedly stated that after four years, they should be allowed to visit their families instead of their posting to Marte local government area to continue the fight against insurgency.

8. Governor Obiano’s aide found dead in his room

Mr Randie Chima, A Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, has been reported dead.

Chima, was found dead in his room at Nwakpodulu Avenue, Awka, the Anambra State capital.

9. Buhari campaign organization threatens to occupy NASS if Saraki fails to resign

The Buhari Campaign Organisation has vowed to physically take over the National Assembly complex if Senate President Bukola Saraki does not resign from office.

The vow by the group also received support from the All Progressives Congress, APC which, however, said though in support of the group’s intent, it would not join in mobilising for the showdown.

10. Aruna Quadri wins ITTF/Nigeria open title

Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri has emerged winner of men’s singles of this year’s edition of the 2018 ITTF Challenge Nigeria Open.

Quadri defeated Frenchman, Antoine Hachard, the number 16 seed at the Sir Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, becoming the first player to win on home soil since the tournament began in 2014.
