‘Tinubu Needs To Go Home And Rest, He Has Tried His Best’ – Peter Obi
The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party (NDC), Peter Obi, has supported the position of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, that President Bola Tinubu has made efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
Obi, however, argued that the President’s best had not produced the level of security Nigerians deserved, adding that Tinubu should leave office and “go home and rest.”
Naija News reports that the former Anambra State governor stated this during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, which was uploaded on YouTube on Thursday.
He was responding to a question on why Nigerians should support his presidential ambition rather than another opposition candidate.
Obi urged voters to assess his performance in previous public offices and compare it with the policies and proposals he was presenting ahead of the election.
“It’s for you to look at my past and look at what I’m saying now,” he said.
Speaking on Adeboye’s recent comments about Tinubu’s handling of insecurity, Obi described the cleric as a respected religious leader whose opinion should not be dismissed.
He said Adeboye was right to state that the President had tried his best, but insisted that the more important issue was whether that effort was sufficient to solve the country’s worsening security problems.
Obi said, “Somebody asked me yesterday, they said that Pastor Adeboye said Tinubu has tried his best and he’s not happy.
“And I said, no, Pastor Adeboye remains a very revered, respected religious father, whom I believe in his genuineness and goodness.
“And what he said was correct. He said he has tried his best. He’s trying his best. That’s it. It’s the correct answer.
“The question to ask is: Is his best good enough? Where we find ourselves today, that leads to the issue of capacity.”
Obi said leadership should be measured by results and the ability to respond effectively to the challenges confronting citizens.
The opposition politician identified competence, capacity, compassion, commitment and character as essential qualities required of anyone seeking to govern the country.
He argued that Nigeria’s security situation showed that the current administration lacked the necessary capacity to protect lives and property effectively.
“When I talk about leadership, I say competence, capacity, compassion, commitment, character. These are the issues. President Tinubu is tired. He needs to go home and rest,” Obi said.
According to him, Nigerians must examine the records and capabilities of those seeking public office rather than base their electoral decisions solely on political affiliations or campaign promises.
Adeboye Defends Tinubu
Adeboye had earlier defended Tinubu against accusations that he had failed to act on the country’s worsening insecurity.
The cleric spoke during the US-Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala organised by the Save Nigeria Group in Washington, D.C., on June 23.
He argued that the President, as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, had discharged his responsibility by issuing instructions to military commanders and other security officials.
“I don’t support those who are accusing the President of not doing enough. When the Commander-in-Chief has given instructions to his subordinates, he has done his bit. You don’t expect him to go and put on khaki and fight,” Adeboye had said.
Despite defending Tinubu, the RCCG leader expressed concern that terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes had spread from the northern part of the country to southern states.
He disclosed that he advised the President to give military commanders a 90-day deadline to bring insecurity under control or resign from their positions.
Adeboye also urged the government to identify and prosecute sponsors of terrorism, insisting that the authorities already knew some of those financing violent groups in the country.
