Transfer: Brentford Sign Callum Wilson As Newcastle Land Ajax’s Sean Steur

Brentford have completed the signing of experienced striker Callum Wilson on a one-year deal following his departure from West Ham after the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League.

Naija News reports that Callum Wilson, 34, arrives at the Gtech Community Stadium as a free agent, becoming Brentford’s latest addition after the signing of Jaidon Anthony from Burnley earlier this week.

Bees head coach Keith Andrews believes Wilson’s arrival will strengthen his attacking options and provide valuable experience for the club’s younger forwards.

“Callum is someone that everyone will be familiar with. He has been a Premier League goalscorer for such a long time,” Andrews said.

“He gives us more options in that area of the pitch, and will help Igor Thiago and Kaye Furo with the experience that he has.”

Andrews also described Wilson as a “really good signing”, praising the former England international’s ability to find the net and his influence around the training ground.

Wilson joins Brentford after scoring seven goals in 32 appearances for West Ham last season. He has also enjoyed spells with Bournemouth and Newcastle United, earning a reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable finishers.

At international level, he won nine England caps between 2018 and 2023, scored twice and represented the Three Lions at the 2022 World Cup.

His move also comes after speculation linked him with a return to boyhood club Coventry City, who are back in the Premier League after winning last season’s Championship title.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have strengthened for the future after completing the signing of highly rated Ajax midfielder Sean Steur in a deal worth up to £23 million.

The 18-year-old arrived on Tyneside on Wednesday before completing his medical and signing a five-year contract that runs until 2031.

“It’s an incredible feeling to be here,” Steur said. “It’s a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world.

“I was at home at Ajax, I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories – but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it’s really hard to say no.”

Steur broke into Ajax’s first team during the second half of last season and impressed with a string of mature performances, including a start in the De Klassieker victory over Feyenoord at just 17 years old.

His underlying numbers also stood out. Among Eredivisie midfielders aged 18 or younger at the start of the campaign, he ranked first for chances created, total carries and duel success, while placing second for passes completed, passing accuracy, tackles, possession won and duels won.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe believes the Dutch teenager has the qualities to develop into an important player for the Magpies.

“We see real potential in Sean and believe he has the characteristics to become a valuable player for us for years to come,” Howe said.

“Sean is an exciting addition to our squad. He’s had an excellent upbringing at Ajax, who have an outstanding track record of producing young players.”
