2026 Commonwealth Games: NSC Welcomes Team Nigeria To Aberdeen Training Camp

Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and Team Nigeria’s Chef de Mission to the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Bukola Olopade, has welcomed the country’s athletes and officials to their pre-Games training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The Nigerian contingent will spend 20 days in Aberdeen before relocating to the Games Village in Glasgow ahead of the start of the Commonwealth Games.

Olopade toured the camp’s facilities and accommodation before receiving athletes as they arrived, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to giving the team the best possible preparation for the competition.

“We are here because preparation is everything. Our athletes deserve the very best environment to train, recover and compete, and that is exactly what we have provided in Aberdeen,” Olopade stated.

“We want every member of Team Nigeria to remain focused because the nation believes in them, and we are confident they will make Nigeria proud in Glasgow.

“Our responsibility is to eliminate every avoidable distraction and allow our athletes and coaches to concentrate fully on performance. We have planned meticulously, and I am pleased with what I have seen since arriving at the camp. The atmosphere is excellent, the facilities are first-class, and the athletes are in high spirits.”

By Friday night, 54 athletes had arrived at the Aberdeen camp, while more competitors and officials were expected over the weekend.

Among those welcomed by Olopade were team captain and multiple Paralympic gold medallist Folashade Oluwafemiayo, sprinter Favour Ashe and quarter-miler Patience George-Okon.

Aberdeen was chosen to provide a calm, high-performance environment where athletes can acclimatise, sharpen their technical preparations and recover ahead of the Games.

Team Nigeria is expected to spend about three weeks at the camp before heading to Glasgow, where the 2026 Commonwealth Games will be staged from 23 July to 2 August.
