Folashade Oluwafemiayo Named Team Nigeria Captain For 2026 Commonwealth Games
Nigeria’s multiple Paralympic and world champion, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, has been named captain of Team Nigeria for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
This development places one of Nigeria’s most accomplished athletes at the helm of its delegation as the country prepares for the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for 23 July to 2 August.
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said the choice was driven by merit and Oluwafemiayo’s outstanding record.
He said, “We are intentional about the selection of our team captain. Folashade Oluwafemiayo is the ideal choice, having consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, resilience and excellence throughout her distinguished career.
“She is a multiple gold medallist, a former world champion and one of Nigeria’s most decorated para-athletes. Her leadership qualities and winning mentality make her an inspiration to every member of Team Nigeria.”
Oluwafemiayo is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading para powerlifters. A four-time world champion and two-time Paralympic gold medallist, she has won titles at the Paralympic Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games while setting world records.
Her achievements include a gold medal at the 2021 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she lifted a world record 152.5kg. She also claimed heavyweight gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Her appointment is also seen as recognition of the consistent success of Nigeria’s para-athletes, who have delivered a significant share of the country’s medals at the Paralympic Games, Commonwealth Games, African Games and World Championships.
