Cristiano Ronaldo Declares ‘I’m Back’ After Historic Double

Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a thunderous response to his critics on Tuesday night, June 23, declaring “we’re back” after firing Portugal to a commanding 5-0 win over Uzbekistan at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in a dominant display that saw him become the first player in football history to score in six different World Cups. After weeks of scrutiny following Portugal’s disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo, Ronaldo finally produced the statement performance many had been waiting for.

The 41-year-old needed only six minutes to silence the doubters, meeting Joao Cancelo’s cross with a superb half-volley to open the scoring. He scored again before half-time after racing onto Bruno Fernandes’ perfectly weighted through-ball and finishing with trademark composure.

Ronaldo came close to completing a hat-trick before the halftime break, but Abdukodir Khusanov’s goal-line clearance denied him a third. Even so, the veteran forward left the pitch to a standing ovation after helping Portugal secure a crucial victory in Group K.

Moments after the final whistle, Ronaldo stared into a television camera and appeared to send a direct message to those who had questioned him, shouting: “I’m back.”

Asked later about the celebration, he explained: “I’m very happy but the most important thing is the work the team did and the confidence it gives us.

“Obviously personal records are always nice but my goal is always to help the team achieve its objectives.

“We had to get through many obstacles during the week but the team worked very well, we improved a lot.

“It’s been a difficult week, a dark week without kicking a ball, but we dealt with it as we always do because we believe in our work. It was difficult, but we’re back.”

The goals added another chapter to Ronaldo’s remarkable international career. He has now scored at 11 major tournaments, five more than any other European player, moving further clear of the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann, Miroslav Klose and Xherdan Shaqiri.

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez credited his captain’s leadership for helping the squad navigate a difficult period after the opening-match disappointment.

“It was a difficult week because we hadn’t achieved the result we were aiming for and we had a difficult situation with criticism, noise – which was actually unfair,” Martinez said.

“We were raging, we were sick, but we grew as a team, overcame emotions and have been able to give our very best. Cristiano Ronaldo was a perfect captain, very much focused and made use of his experience because it is not the first time he deals with this situation.

“Our captain is an icon, he is playing in his sixth World Cup. He is a role model that plays for the Portuguese national team, that works hard every day, that tries to improve every training session and with a great attitude on the pitch and also in the dressing room.”
