Portugal Thrash Uzbekistan To Boost World Cup Hopes
Portugal produced one of the most convincing performances of the FIFA World Cup so far, brushing aside Uzbekistan 5-0 on Tuesday to strengthen their grip on a place in the knockout stages.
Roberto Martínez’s men were in control for most of the game in Houston, punishing Uzbekistan’s defensive lapses and leaving the Asian debutants on the brink of an early exit after another heavy defeat.
Portugal nearly made the perfect start when Bruno Fernandes forced a block inside the penalty area, while Cristiano Ronaldo narrowly missed connecting with a dangerous cross from Nuno Mendes. The breakthrough eventually arrived when Ronaldo met another delivery at the near post and fired past goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov.
Mendes doubled the advantage with a brilliantly disguised free-kick, curling the ball into the net while many expected Ronaldo to take the set piece. Uzbekistan thought they had pulled a goal back through Aziz Ganiev’s stunning long-range effort, but VAR intervened and ruled it out for a foul in the build-up.
Portugal continued to press forward and extended their lead before the break when Fernandes picked out Ronaldo, who calmly finished to make it 3-0.
The Portuguese side maintained their dominance after half-time and were rewarded again when a Fernandes corner caused confusion in the Uzbekistan box, with the ball deflecting off Abdukodir Khusanov and then Nematov before crossing the line for an own goal.
Uzbekistan struggled to contain Portugal’s attacking movement and almost gifted another goal after a mistake from Nematov, although the opportunity went begging. Rafael Leão eventually added the fifth with a powerful strike from the edge of the area to complete the rout.
