Samuel Chukwueze Bids Emotional Farewell To Mother In Abia Burial Ceremony
Super Eagle,s winger, Samuel Chukwueze, on Friday, laid his mother, Mrs Serah Chinyere Chukwueze, to rest in Umuahia, Abia State, bringing together football figures, dignitaries and mourners from across the South-East for an emotional farewell.
Mrs Chukwueze died on January 29 after a brief illness while the 27-year-old was on loan at Fulham. The Nigeria international was unable to return home immediately due to his professional commitments in England.
In line with South-East burial traditions, which often require extensive planning for the funeral of a family matriarch, the ceremony was held after the end of the football season to allow for a fitting send-off.
Among those in attendance were Ibrahim Gusau, who led a delegation from the Nigeria Football Federation, as well as fellow Super Eagles stars Chidozie Awaziem and Kelechi Iheanacho.
Dressed in white traditional attire, Chukwueze appeared overcome with emotion during the burial rites. The former Villarreal player was seen reflecting quietly before his mother’s interment, though he appeared more at ease during the reception that followed.
With the burial now concluded, attention is expected to turn to Chukwueze’s future at club level. His loan spell with Fulham ended at the close of the season after he recorded three goals and four assists in 23 Premier League appearances.
The winger is understood to favour a stay in London, but Fulham have reportedly ruled out a permanent move. His parent club, AC Milan, are also believed to be open to offers as they undergo a period of transition, leaving the Nigerian’s next destination uncertain ahead of the summer transfer window.
