Okonkwo Eyes Super Eagles Debut After FIFA Switch Approval

New Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo says he is eager to make his senior debut after becoming eligible to represent the country, with a potential call-up looming ahead of the Unity Cup and June friendlies against Portugal and Poland.

The 24-year-old, born in Camden to Nigerian parents, completed his international switch from England last month after receiving approval from FIFA. He previously featured for England at the youth level during his time at Arsenal.

Reports say the Wrexham goalkeeper opted for Nigeria after a meeting in London with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in June 2025, a tournament won by the Super Eagles.

Speaking in a Nigeria Football Federation-branded video, Okonkwo shared his excitement at the prospect of representing Nigeria.

“It’s an honour being allowed to play for your country. I am so excited, I can’t wait. To finally have the opportunity is incredible,” the goalkeeper said.

Okonkwo enters a crowded goalkeeping pool led by Stanley Nwabali, alongside Francis Uzoho, Amas Obasogie, Maduka Okoye and teenage prospect Ebenezer Harcourt.

After progressing through Arsenal’s academy, Okonkwo had loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz before joining Wrexham on loan in 2023. The move became permanent a year later.

He has since become the first choice at the Welsh club, making 121 appearances and helping secure two promotions. This season he played 44 matches in all competitions and kept 10 clean sheets as Wrexham narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League.
