Kompany Explains Why Bayern Fell Short As PSG Reach Champions League Final

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany admitted fine margins cost his side a place in the UEFA Champions League final after their semi-final exit to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, May 6.

The Bavarians were held to a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena but bowed out 6-5 on aggregate following last week’s 5-4 defeat in Paris.

Kompany cut a disappointed figure afterwards yet refused to criticise his players, instead praising PSG’s defensive discipline under coach Luis Enrique.

“It’s obviously tough to take; we lost narrowly. We matched PSG, these games are decided by small details,” Kompany said.

Bayern began with urgency and carved out promising openings in the first half, forcing PSG onto the back foot for long spells. The Bundesliga side repeatedly worked the ball into wide areas and pushed numbers forward, but the final touch never came.

“Our first half was good, I felt that we were the better team and often got into the areas where we are dangerous, but PSG defended the crosses very well,” Kompany added.

Despite the pressure, the French champions stayed organised and struck when chances appeared, doing enough over two legs to edge the tie.

He said, “They were very active. Although we got into dangerous situations, they made sure we didn’t get the final shot off. The Champions League is over for us for now.”

The result ends Bayern’s latest European run and shifts attention back to domestic ambitions as the club looks to regroup ahead of next season.
