PSG UCL Celebrations Marred By Violence As Over 400 Arrested Across France

Paris Saint-Germain’s long-awaited European triumph was marred by violence across France, with more than 400 people arrested after celebrations of the club’s Champions League win descended into chaos.

Thousands of supporters flooded the streets on Saturday night after PSG secured the biggest trophy in European club football. Jubilant scenes unfolded along the Champs-Élysées and around the Parc des Princes as fans celebrated deep into the night. But what began as a festive occasion soon turned ugly in parts of Paris and several other cities.

French authorities said 416 people were arrested nationwide, including 280 in the capital. Seven police officers were injured during the disturbances, while cars, shops and public property were damaged as clashes erupted between some supporters and security forces.

Fireworks and flares lit up the Paris skyline as police struggled to contain pockets of disorder. Officers deployed tear gas in central Paris after groups of individuals allegedly vandalised property and confronted security personnel.

Videos widely shared on social media showed burning vehicles, shattered storefronts and crowds setting off flares as celebrations spiralled out of control in some areas.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez condemned the violence, describing the scenes as “absolutely unacceptable.”

The unrest also triggered political reactions. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen criticised the recurring disorder that has accompanied major football celebrations in France.

“Only in France does a football club’s victory spark riots,” Le Pen wrote on social media platform X.

“Only in France does everyone feel compelled to lock themselves in their homes on the evening of a victory to avoid being confronted with violence.”

The incidents revived memories of similar scenes following PSG’s previous European success a year ago, when violent disturbances overshadowed celebrations and resulted in two deaths, including that of a 17-year-old.

Despite the overnight unrest, victory celebrations were set to continue on Sunday, with PSG scheduled for a parade near the Eiffel Tower before a reception hosted by Emmanuel Macron.
