PSG Seek Lens Fixture Postponement Amid Champions League Clash With Liverpool
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have asked for their crucial Ligue 1 meeting with RC Lens to be postponed, citing a packed schedule around their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool.
The league leaders are due to travel to Lens on Saturday, 11 April, just three days after hosting Liverpool in the first leg, and three days before the return fixture at Anfield.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are set to face Fulham in the Premier League on the same date.
Lens have made their stance clear. The title challengers, chasing a first league crown since 1998, have strongly opposed the request lodged with the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP).
In a sharply worded statement, the club warned against what they described as a “troubling sentiment” should the fixture be moved.
“Beyond this specific case, the question raised is a more fundamental one: that of the respect due to the competition itself,” the statement read.
“For one is entitled to wonder when, on its own soil, the league sometimes seems to be relegated to second place behind other ambitions, however legitimate they may be.”
Second-placed Lens sit just one point behind PSG, adding further weight to the fixture’s significance. Head coach Pierre Sage also voiced his opposition after his side’s 5-1 win over Angers.
PSG made a similar move in the previous round against Chelsea, when their domestic match with Nantes was postponed. Luis Enrique’s side went on to progress comfortably, winning 8-2 on aggregate.
The final decision rests with the LFP, which has indicated it is open to helping French clubs competing in Europe.
Elsewhere, RC Strasbourg have also requested a postponement of their league trip to Brest, as it falls between their Conference League ties against Mainz.
