NFF Congress Approves Statute Amendments, Names Electoral Committees At Yenagoa Meeting
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved key reforms and appointments following its Extraordinary General Assembly held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State earlier today, March 23, 2026.
Delegates gathered at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall observed a minute’s silence in honour of former Technical Director and two-time Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde and ex-Nigeria captain Henry Nwosu, alongside other late stakeholders in the game.
The Congress commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as sustained backing for football and sports, citing improved funding, incentives for national teams and support for international competitions.
It also acknowledged the presence and contributions of the National Sports Commission (NSC) chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade.
Bayelsa State received praise for hosting the assembly, with Governor Douye Diri and his deputy Peter Pere-Tubo Akpe singled out for their support and hospitality.
Representatives of world football bodies, including FIFA official Solomon Mudege and Confederation of African Football delegate Nadim Magdy, were also in attendance and delivered goodwill messages.
A major highlight of the meeting was the unanimous adoption of amendments to the NFF Statutes, Electoral Code and Standing Orders, all updated in the March 2026 edition.
The Congress also approved the composition of the NFF Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee, with 12 members drawn from the six geopolitical zones. The committees are expected to be inaugurated in Abuja on Wednesday, with members to elect their chairmen in line with electoral guidelines.
“The Congress, based on proposals by leaders of the six (6) geopolitical zones, approved the appointment of twelve (12) persons (two from each geopolitical zone) to serve on the NFF Electoral Committee and the NFF Electoral Appeals Committee,” the Communique reads.
“The twelve persons so nominated are: Barr. Matthew Burkala, SAN and Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi (North Central); Alhaji Babagoni Grema and Barr. Benjamin Sak (North East); Bature Musa and Prof. Abdulmalik Awwal (North West); Hon. Justice C. J. Aneke and Arinze Azubuike Anughere, Esq. (South East); Hon. (Dr) Akogun Olugbenga Omole and Abayomi Akin Omoyimi, Esq. (South West) and; Ayibaye Peter Great Temedie, Esq. and Ayi Ekpo Ukpayam (South South).
“The appointed persons will be inaugurated into the two different committees in Abuja on Wednesday, 25th March 2026, with members to choose their chairmen. In line with the NFF Electoral Code, five (5) persons will serve as full members on the Electoral Committee with two (2) other persons as alternates, while three (3) persons will serve on the Electoral Appeals Committee with two (2) other persons as alternates.”
In another key decision, global audit firm Ernst & Young was appointed as the new independent auditor of the federation for an initial four-year term, following a competitive selection process involving seven firms. The Congress paid tribute to PricewaterhouseCoopers for its nine years of service.
Looking ahead, delegates approved Lafia, Nasarawa State as the host city for the NFF Elective Congress scheduled for 26 September 2026.
The assembly concluded with a unanimous vote of confidence in the NFF Executive Committee led by President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, backing its ongoing efforts to develop football across the country.
