Mikel Obi Says AFCON Land Promise Remains Unfulfilled, Rejects Roles With NFF

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has revealed that he is yet to receive the plot of land promised to members of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad by the Federal Government.

The former Chelsea midfielder said the pledge, made after Nigeria lifted the AFCON title in South Africa under then President Goodluck Jonathan, has still not been fulfilled in his case.

Speaking on a podcast hosted by Peter Crouch, Mikel Obi recalled the celebrations that followed the team’s triumph but admitted the promised reward never reached him.

“We got a nice reception. We got offered a massive plot of land each. I don’t think I know where mine is,” Mikel said.

The 38-year-old retired from professional football in 2022 after an 18-year career that saw him enjoy major success with Chelsea, winning the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and several domestic honours.

Mikel also disclosed that he has turned down repeated invitations to take up a role in Nigerian football, insisting he cannot work with the current administrators.

The former midfielder criticised the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), accusing officials of holding on to power for too long while failing to improve the game.

“We don’t have people that know about football,” Mikel Obi said.

“They occupy their positions year after year, controlling everything. They are reluctant to relinquish their power and the financial benefits that come with it.

“I have received calls to return and get involved, but I have declined. Those individuals need to go. I cannot work with people who do not share the same objectives as I do.

“The goal is to improve the standard of football in Nigeria, which can be achieved quite easily. The funds must be allocated to the appropriate areas.”

He maintained that Nigerian football has the potential to reach a much higher level if resources are properly managed and invested in the right areas.
