Alex Iwobi Hails ‘Unique’ Goal As Fulham Eye European Spot
Alex Iwobi has described his superb strike in Fulham’s win over Tottenham Hotspur as “unique” after firing the Whites to another crucial win in the Premier League.
Alex Iwobi produced a brilliant finish from outside the box to seal Fulham’s win at Craven Cottage, capping an assured display from Marco Silva’s side.
“Unique; that’s the best way to put it. I don’t think anyone has groin to open up their hip and side-foot it like that,” the former Arsenal man told Sky Sports.
“When [Harry Wilson] passes to me I had one thought to side foot it. I do it in training, so my teammates weren’t surprised.”
Fulham had earlier gone ahead through Harry Wilson, who rifled home after Oscar Bobb had returned the ball into his path. Iwobi doubled the advantage in the 34th minute, guiding a powerful side-footed effort into the corner from the edge of the area.
The 29-year-old was delighted to see Fulham follow up their previous win over Sunderland with another three points.
“Another London derby, a special moment when we play in front of our fans, we are grateful we were able to achieve that result today,” he said.
“We feel we controlled the game and created a lot of opportunities to score, but if you don’t take them it becomes shaky. Credit to us we were able to stay strong towards the end.”
Iwobi also reserved praise for Wilson’s impact. The Nigerian international said, “He is a special player, when he has the ball we know he will create something or score. We give him that trust and freedom to do as he pleases.”
Silva was equally impressed with the finish, calling it one of the midfielder’s finest in a Fulham shirt.
“It’s one of his best goals, he is capable of these types of things. He is stronger when he tries to choose a corner and make a strong pass,” Silva said after the match.
Iwobi has now registered four goals and three assists in 22 league appearances this season.
Fulham Push for European Qualification
Back-to-back wins over Sunderland and Tottenham have lifted Fulham to 40 points, just three shy of seventh place as the race for European qualification intensifies.
Iwobi insists the squad are ready for the fight over the final stretch.
“I think just to be mentally strong and stick together, as we have been,” he told Fulham’s official website.
“Everyone is fighting for each other, even the ones that came into the squad, like Issa for example, Joa was ill and Issa was able to step into that role, so it’s a good and competitive spirit that we have in the team.
“As long as we keep that, I’m sure that we can finish high on the table.
“We were ambitious from the start of the season, but the main thing for us is to remain consistent. We see the quality in training every day, it’s just bringing it into matches.
“The results [against Sunderland & Spurs] speak for themselves, not just the performances but to get the results as well, so as long as we keep doing that.
“Of course, we had a difficult run, losing three out of four or something like that, so getting back-to-back wins gives us a boost and the confidence to keep going for the rest of the season.”
