Alex Iwobi Names His Most Favourite Super Eagles Moment Ahead Of 100th Cap
Alex Iwobi has revealed that his match-winning goal against Zambia in 2017 remains the standout moment of his international career as he prepares to make his 100th appearance for Nigeria.
Naija News reports that the Fulham midfielder is set to join an exclusive group of Super Eagles centurions when Nigeria face Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday. He will become only the fourth player to reach the milestone after Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama and Ahmed Musa.
Iwobi made his senior debut for Nigeria in a friendly against DR Congo in Belgium on October 8, 2015, having previously represented England at the youth level. Nearly 11 years later, the midfielder is preparing for a landmark night in national colours.
“I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white. I am grateful to everyone, including the coach who called me up to the team for the first time. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria,” he told NFF Media.
Reflecting on his decision to switch allegiance to Nigeria, Iwobi said family support played a key role.
“I first went to the Nigeria U-23 team camp and felt at home. I had represented England at the youth level but always felt Nigeria was home. My father always told me to go out there and enjoy my football, and make the decision that I felt was good for me. He was part of the decision, but he didn’t force it on me,” he said.
When asked to identify his most memorable Super Eagles moment, the 30-year-old pointed to his decisive goal against Zambia at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in October 2017, a strike that secured Nigeria’s place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
“I loved the occasion because my dad and my mum were both at the stadium and saw it all, and we celebrated together afterwards. It was an exciting moment,” he said.
“Yes, I would have loved to win the AFCON and perhaps be with the Eagles at the FIFA World Cup that is about to kick off in a few days, but I have no regrets.”
Since his debut, Alex Iwobi has represented Nigeria at four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, winning silver in 2023 and bronze medals in 2019 and 2025. He was also part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Heading into his 100th international appearance, Iwobi has scored 10 goals and provided eight assists in 99 matches for the Super Eagles.
