Arthur Okonkwo Yet To Be Cleared For Super Eagles Selection – NFF

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo is not yet eligible to represent the Super Eagles, putting an end to speculation surrounding his international future.

Arthur Okonkwo, 24, was born in London to Nigerian parents and has long been viewed as one of the promising goalkeepers with dual nationality options. Having featured for England at youth level in previous years, the former Arsenal academy product recently signalled his desire to switch allegiance to Nigeria.

Reports had circulated in recent months suggesting that FIFA approved his change of association in December 2025. Those claims gained traction amid fresh rumours that the Wrexham shot stopper had been pencilled in for Nigeria’s squad to the upcoming four-nation invitational tournament scheduled to take place in Amman, Jordan next month.

However, the NFF has now clarified that the administrative process is still incomplete.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, the federation’s Head of International Competitions, Dayo Enebi Achor, dismissed suggestions that the paperwork had been finalised.

“The process is still ongoing and has not been completed yet,” Enebi told Footy-Africa.

“Okonkwo is one we are looking at, but as of today, his international switch has not been concluded.”

The clarification means Okonkwo remains ineligible for selection until FIFA formally confirms the change of association. Under FIFA regulations, players who have represented one country at the youth level must complete a formal switch before appearing in competitive matches for another senior national team.

Nigeria have in recent years successfully secured the allegiance of several dual-nationality players, strengthening the depth of the Super Eagles squad across key positions. With goalkeeping options constantly under review, Okonkwo’s situation will continue to attract attention as the team prepares for upcoming international assignments.
