Rivers United On Brink Of CAF Champions League Exit After Power Dynamos Defeat
Rivers United’s hopes of progressing in this season’s CAF Champions League are hanging by a thread after a damaging 1-0 home loss to Zambia’s Power Dynamos on Sunday.
Nigeria’s only representatives in the competition went into the Matchday Four clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo desperate for a morale-boosting win to revive their stuttering campaign. Instead, they were left stunned by a disciplined and resolute visiting side.
The decisive moment arrived five minutes into the second half when Power Dynamos defender Kondwani Chiboni struck in the 50th minute, silencing the home crowd and handing the Nigeria Premier Football League leaders a potentially season-defining setback.
Both sides had played out a goalless draw in Lusaka last week, raising hopes that Rivers United could build on that result. However, Sunday’s defeat deepened their struggles in Group A.
The loss leaves Finidi George’s men rooted to the bottom of the group with just one point from four matches. Power Dynamos now sit on four points, RS Berkane occupy second place with seven points, while defending champions Pyramids lead the standings with 10 points.
Although Rivers United still have a mathematical chance of reaching the knockout stage, their qualification hopes are no longer within their full control.
They must win their remaining two fixtures and also rely on RS Berkane losing both of their remaining games. One of those matches will see Rivers United travel to Morocco to face the North African side on February 13.
Before that crucial tie, Rivers United will return to Uyo to take on group leaders Pyramids on February 8 in another must-win encounter.
Their continental campaign has so far been close to disastrous. They began the group stage with a heavy 3-0 away defeat to Pyramids, then let a 1-0 lead slip in a home draw against RS Berkane.
A goalless stalemate away to Power Dynamos offered brief hope, but Sunday’s defeat has further compounded their woes.
In contrast, their domestic form has been far more encouraging. Rivers United currently sit top of the NPFL table, holding a one-point lead with three outstanding matches delayed due to their CAF Champions League commitments.
