Rivers United Players, Officials Involve In Road Accident
Rivers United have confirmed that some of their players and officials sustained minor injuries after the team’s bus was involved in a road accident while travelling for their President Federation Cup round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side disclosed the incident in a statement on Thursday, revealing that the accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team left their camp for Awka, Anambra State.
The club, however, assured supporters that there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.
“We wish to inform our supporters, stakeholders and the general public that the team contingent was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for the President’s Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United,” the club said.
“The safety, health and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority. We can confirm that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition.”
The incident sparked concern among supporters and members of the football community, with Rivers United expressing gratitude for the messages, prayers and support received following the accident.
The Port Harcourt club stated that further information regarding the team’s travel arrangements and the status of Saturday’s Federation Cup encounter would be communicated in due course.
The accident comes at a crucial stage of Rivers United’s campaign. The Pride of Rivers secured a place in the round of 16 on Monday after defeating Rangers International 3-2.
With their league challenge ending in disappointment after a second-place finish, the President Federation Cup now represents the club’s last opportunity to end the season with silverware.
Rivers United finished the 2025/2026 NPFL season on 67 points, just one point behind champions Rangers.
Their scheduled opponents, Nasarawa United, await in Awka as uncertainty surrounds the team’s immediate travel plans following Thursday’s accident.
