Transfer Updates: Guehi, Rashford, Mathys Tel, Gomez, Klopp, Others
Manchester City are stepping up plans to strengthen their defence and are weighing up a late January transfer move for Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi.
The Premier League champions are understood to be keen on the 25-year-old but are reluctant to meet Palace’s transfer valuation, which exceeds £35 million. As things stand, City are exploring whether a deal can be struck below that figure before the window shuts.
However, the race for Guehi’s signature is far from straightforward. Bayern Munich have also entered the conversation, with sporting director Max Eberl reportedly making direct contact with the defender in recent days.
The German giants are pushing hard to lure him to Bavaria in the summer, confident they can present a compelling sporting project.
Elsewhere, Manchester United have made it clear there is no way back for Marcus Rashford, despite the exit of former head coach Ruben Amorim.
The 28-year-old forward is currently on loan at Barcelona, and United sources insist he is not part of their long-term plans once that spell comes to an end.
United are, however, sanctioning a temporary move for one of their young prospects. Highly rated striker Ethan Wheatley is set to join Bradford City on loan until the end of the season as he looks to gain regular senior football.
At the City Ground, Nottingham Forest have made an enquiry about Bournemouth winger Marcus Tavernier. The Cherries, though, have no intention of selling the 26-year-old midway through the campaign.
Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, are standing firm over Mathys Tel. Despite loan interest from Paris FC, Spurs are blocking all approaches for the 20-year-old attacker as they plan for the remainder of the season.
Bournemouth are also active in the transfer market and continue negotiations with Ferencvaros over a potential deal for Hungarian midfielder Alex Toth. Talks are ongoing after the South Coast Club saw an initial £8.6 million offer knocked back.
In the north east, Newcastle United are assessing defensive options following a hamstring injury to England full-back Tino Livramento. The 23-year-old is expected to be sidelined for around eight weeks, prompting Newcastle to consider reinforcements this month.
At Anfield, Liverpool has no plans to let defender Joe Gomez leave during the current window. That stance has been reinforced by a season-ending knee injury to Northern Ireland right-back Conor Bradley.
On the managerial front, former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has emerged as one of Real Madrid’s leading candidates should they move on from Xabi Alonso. Antonio Conte and Enzo Maresca are also said to be under consideration.
Arsenal have no intention of cashing in on defender Ben White. Despite limited minutes this season and interest from Everton and Manchester City, the Gunners remain keen to keep the 28-year-old at the Emirates.
