Old Trafford In Shambles As Brighton Sends Managerless Man United Out Of FA Cup

Manchester United’s turbulent season took another painful turn on Sunday as the managerless Red Devils crashed out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

Goals from Brajan Gruda and former United striker Danny Welbeck sealed a deserved third-round victory for the Seagulls, while Benjamin Sesko’s late header proved only a consolation on a night filled with boos, frustration and growing uncertainty around the club.

United’s misery was compounded in the closing moments when teenage winger Shea Lacey was sent off, summing up a chaotic evening for a side still reeling from Ruben Amorim’s shock sacking earlier in the week.

Caretaker manager Darren Fletcher was unable to arrest United’s alarming decline, with the Red Devils once again looking disjointed and vulnerable.

Naija News reports that Amorim’s dismissal on Monday has left the club scrambling for direction, with former bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick both linked to an interim role until the end of the season.

But the disorder engulfing Old Trafford has made the job increasingly unattractive, regardless of United’s illustrious history.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who led United to their last Premier League title in 2013, watched from the directors’ box as the current side underlined just how far they have fallen from his golden era.

Brighton weathered early pressure, with goalkeeper Jason Steele producing fine saves to deny Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes. Those missed chances proved costly.

In the 12th minute, Welbeck sparked the move that gave Brighton the lead, bursting down the flank and crossing for Georginio Rutter. His header was cleared off the line by Lisandro Martinez, but Gruda reacted quickest to slam the rebound past Senne Lammens from close range.

As United’s defence unravelled, chants against co-owners Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family echoed around Old Trafford. Fernandes dragged a free-kick wide, while Matheus Cunha narrowly missed the target as United trudged off at half-time to a chorus of boos.

United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, making only his second start of the season, struggled to impose himself and was withdrawn in the second half, doing little to challenge Amorim’s earlier decision to largely sideline him this campaign.

But United’s problems ran far deeper than one player. Brighton ruthlessly exposed their defensive frailties again in the 64th minute. Given time and space, Gruda picked out Welbeck inside the box, and the 35-year-old rifled an exquisite finish past Lammens to double Brighton’s advantage.

Welbeck, who won the Premier League with United under Ferguson in 2013, refused to celebrate as the atmosphere inside Old Trafford grew increasingly toxic.

Sesko briefly raised home hopes when he headed home Fernandes’ corner in the 85th minute to set up a tense finale. However, United lacked composure and clarity in search of an equaliser.

Any slim chance of a comeback ended in frustration when Lacey, already on a yellow card, was sent off for throwing the ball away in anger, bringing a fittingly bitter end to another dismal night.

United are now seventh in the Premier League, winless in four games and with just one victory in their last seven matches.

Their woes look set to deepen with a daunting run ahead, a Manchester derby against City next weekend, followed by a trip to league leaders Arsenal on January 25.

After an embarrassing League Cup defeat to fourth-tier Grimsby in August, United have now exited both domestic competitions at the first hurdle for the first time since the 1981/82 season.

For Brighton, the victory was another statement of their growing confidence at Old Trafford. The Seagulls have now won four of their last five visits to the famous ground, avenging their 2023 FA Cup semi-final defeat to United in style.
