AFCON 2025: Eric Chelle Hints On Punishing Osimhen Over Bust-up With Lookman

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has suggested there could be consequences for Victor Osimhen after the striker’s heated on-field confrontation with Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s emphatic win over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The flashpoint came in the second half of Monday night’s Round of 16 encounter, which the Super Eagles won 4-0 to book a place in the quarter-finals of the continental showpiece.

With the Super Eagles already three goals ahead, television cameras caught Osimhen and Lookman in a tense exchange, both players clearly agitated as words were traded on the pitch.

Moments later, Osimhen signalled to the bench that he wanted to be substituted. Chelle responded by introducing Paul Onuachu in his place.

The situation did not end there. At the final whistle, the Galatasaray forward walked straight down the tunnel, opting out of the post-match celebrations with his teammates.

Addressing the incident during his post-match press conference, Chelle refused to be drawn into specifics, making it clear the matter would be handled internally.

“What happened on the pitch will stay in the group,” the coach said.

“I don’t need to tell you what will happen, I keep that to me.”

The drama unfolded despite Osimhen enjoying a productive night in front of goal. The three-time African champions had raced into a commanding lead, with Lookman scoring once and providing two assists for Osimhen’s brace, taking the striker’s tournament tally to three goals.

However, tensions flared after a promising team move broke down midway through the second half. Osimhen appeared frustrated, shouting at Lookman, seemingly upset over a delayed pass.

As he left the pitch, sections of the crowd voiced their displeasure, booing the striker following his request to be taken off.
