Asamoah Gyan Names Three Contenders For AFCON 2025

As the countdown to the December 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) continues, former Ghana star Asamoah Gyan has singled out Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and hosts Morocco as the teams to watch.

Speaking at the CAF Awards in Morocco on Wednesday night, Asamoah Gyan acknowledged the strength of the continent’s football scene but admitted he was disappointed Ghana would miss the tournament.

“We have a lot of giants who are going there. Ghana is out, which we are very disappointed about, but it is okay, we qualify for the World Cup,” he said.

The ex-striker, who captained the Black Stars for several years, highlighted Nigeria’s performance at the last AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, pointing to the Super Eagles as a side that came very close to lifting the trophy.

“Nigeria did well, they were close the last two years. Ivory Coast did well, we have a lot of teams,” he said.

Gyan also praised Morocco, noting their consistent form and growing confidence on the continental stage.

“Morocco is also a strong contender, which is doing well. I will say these three countries that I have mentioned, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, and Morocco,” he added.

Nigeria’s journey to the last AFCON final ended in heartbreak, losing 2-1 to the host, the Ivory Coast. With the next tournament fast approaching, Gyan’s prediction has already sparked debate among fans and pundits about which nations are most likely to lift the trophy.
