Super Eagles Respond To Hotel Criticism As 14 Players Arrive In Morocco Ahead Of Gabon Tie

The Super Eagles have addressed social media criticism over their hotel in Morocco, explaining that the choice was based on convenience and team preparation ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-off against Gabon.

Naija News reports that a video shared by midfielder Alex Iwobi showing the view from his hotel room sparked comments online questioning the standard of the accommodation.

“The Super Eagles are camped at the Rive Hotel. What trended earlier was the view of an old building that can be seen from a window,” said Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe earlier today, November 10. “Rive was chosen because of its proximity to the team’s training facility and the stadium here in Rabat.”

The squad is steadily coming together in Rabat, with 14 players already in camp. They include Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Tolu Arokodare, Olakunle Olusegun, Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, William Troost-Ekong, Benjamin Frederick, Chidozie Awaziem, Amas Obasogie, Stanley Nwabali, Semi Ajayi, and Ademola Lookman. Seven more players are expected to join the team later today.

CAF generally handles hotel arrangements for teams during international tournaments, but national associations such as the Nigeria Football Federation can request alternatives if necessary.

This is not the first time Nigerian players have raised concerns about accommodations at tournaments. Earlier this year, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade criticised the rooms provided by CAF during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which was also hosted in Morocco.

The Super Eagles are preparing to face Gabon on November 13 in a decisive match that will determine who advances to the next round. The winner will face either DR Congo or Cameroon, and a victory there would earn a spot in the intercontinental playoffs, bringing Nigeria a step closer to qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
