Jordi Alba Announces Retirement From Football

Spanish icon, Jordi Alba has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current MLS season with Inter Miami, bringing to an end one of the most remarkable careers of his generation.

Jordi Alba, 36, shared the news on social media, saying the time had come to close a defining chapter in his life.

“Hello everyone, the time has come to close a momentous stage in my life. I have made the decision to end my career as a professional footballer at the end of this season. I do so with absolute conviction, fulfilment, and happiness,” Alba wrote.

Alba went on to thank the clubs and supporters who defined his journey. He said, “To FC Barcelona, the club of my life, the one that saw me grow up as a child and allowed me to reach the pinnacle of my career, live more than an unforgettable decade, and win every title possible. To the Spanish national team, proud to have worn this jersey and grateful to be part of your history. And finally, to Inter Miami, thank you for opening your doors to me, welcoming me with love, and allowing me to complete this journey by enjoying it every last moment.”

The veteran full-back also had an emotional message for his family and fans. He said, “Thanks to all the fans for your love. You taught me that the jersey isn’t just worn, it’s felt. Thanks to my parents and my brother, for being by my side every step of the way since I was a child. For all the efforts you made to make my dream come true. This is also yours. I love you very much.”

A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Alba’s name became synonymous with consistency, speed, and creativity on the left flank. After an impressive spell at Valencia, he returned to Barcelona in 2012 and went on to form one of the most feared partnerships in world football with Lionel Messi. Their telepathic connection produced countless goals and unforgettable moments over more than a decade.

In his 11 years at the Camp Nou, Alba collected an incredible haul of trophies: six La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey crowns, four Spanish Super Cups, one UEFA Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup. On the international stage, he played 93 times for Spain, winning the 2012 European Championship and the UEFA Nations League.

When he joined Inter Miami in 2023, many thought his best days were behind him, but Alba proved otherwise. He quickly adapted to life in the MLS, helping the club win the Leagues Cup and the Supporters’ Shield while adding a touch of European class to the American game.

It’s another emotional goodbye for Inter Miami fans, coming just days after his close friend and former Barcelona teammate, Sergio Busquets, also confirmed his retirement. The duo reunited in Florida together with Messi and Luis Suarez to give fans one last taste of their famous Barcelona chemistry.

Now, with retirement on the horizon, Alba’s focus is on one final goal, helping Inter Miami fight for the MLS Cup before finally hanging up his boots.
