Top Performing Nigerian Footballers Abroad Last Weekend: Adams, Iheanacho Shine

As Nigeria gears up for crucial World Cup qualifiers later this month, several Super Eagles footballers and rising talents caught the eye with outstanding performances for their clubs across Europe and beyond.

From Spain to Scotland and Algeria, Nigerian footballers made decisive contributions for their sides.

In Spain, Barcelona’s unbeaten run in La Liga was shattered at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium where Sevilla thrashed the Catalan giants 4-1, thanks in part to a superb Nigerian connection. Chidera Ejuke and Akor Adams combined brilliantly, with Ejuke setting up Adams for a stoppage-time goal that sealed the win.

Adams had promised he could score against Hansi Flick’s men if given a chance, and he delivered. “I think I can score in every game if I have the opportunities,” he said before the match.

Now scoring in consecutive league games, the striker is finding form just in time for Nigeria’s upcoming campaign, while he continues to rebuild his Super Eagles credentials with another eye-catching display on the wing.

In Scotland, Kelechi Iheanacho struck from the penalty spot in Celtic’s thrilling 3-2 win over Motherwell at Celtic Park.

The former Leicester City striker has quickly become a fan favourite in Glasgow, with three goals and an assist in just six games. His sharpness and leadership could prove vital for Nigeria in the qualifiers.

In England, Chiamaka Nnadozie was a standout performer, despite Brighton’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the Women’s Super League. The Nigerian goalkeeper pulled off six stunning saves, denying Spurs multiple times.

Naija News reports that Nnadozie was nominated for the Yachine Trophy and finished as one of the top five women’s goalkeepers in the world.

In the English Championship, Femi Azeez stole the show as Millwall swept aside West Brom 3-0. The winger set up Jake Cooper for the opener before scoring himself with a cool finish in the second half. His dynamism earned him Man of the Match honours and further highlighted his growth this season.

In the same vein, David Akintola netted his first goal of the season to hand Hull City a 1-0 win over Sheffield United. His clinical finish, combined with Semi Ajayi’s strong return from injury, has helped the Tigers secure a valuable clean sheet.

In North Africa, Sikiru Alimi produced a match-winning display for JS Saoura, scoring twice in a 3-2 victory over Olympique Akbou. His stoppage-time strike sealed all three points.

Samuel Akere was another standout, registering an assist in Widzew Łódź’s 4-2 win over KS Nieciecza. The lively winger tormented defenders with his pace, creating four chances before being substituted in the second half.

From Ejuke’s flair in Spain to Nnadozie’s heroics in England, Nigerian players continue to make headlines abroad. Their form offers a timely boost for the Super Eagles as they head into an important international window.
