Man United’s Patrick Dorgu Shares Meaning Of His Nigerian Name, Iwobi Explains Aina’s AFCON Final Struggles
Manchester United’s left-back, Patrick Dorgu has spoken about his Nigerian heritage, giving fans a glimpse into the meaning behind his traditional name.
Naija News reports that Patrick Dorgu arrived at Old Trafford last November as Ruben Amorim’s first signing. He was born in Copenhagen to Nigerian parents.
Though he represents Denmark on the international stage, the 20-year-old has remained closely connected to his roots. In a feature on Manchester United’s official website, Dorgu explained the cultural significance of his Igbo name, which comes from Nigeria’s south-east.
“Chinazaekpere means God answers prayers,” Dorgu revealed. “That’s what my parents gave to me when I was born.”
Meanwhile, Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi has defended teammate Ola Aina after Nigeria’s painful Africa Cup of Nations final defeat to the Ivory Coast earlier this year.
On February 11, 2024, Aina faced a tough evening against Simon Adingra, who set up both goals as the Elephants came from behind to win 2-1 in Abidjan. Many Nigerian fans questioned Aina’s display on the night, but Iwobi has now shed light on what really happened.
“For those that don’t know, I am sure Ola has already put it out there in many different podcasts and interviews,” Iwobi said on Episode 2 of The Bassey and Iwobi Show.
“He played with a grade 2c hamstring injury, I don’t know how.”
Aina is expected to redeem himself during the 2025 edition of the competition, which is expected to take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
