The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) recorded partial compliance from various institutions on the first day of its nationwide strike over the brutalisation of its national president, Joe Ajaero.

Naija News recalls that the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had last week announced their decision to embark on an industrial action over the brutalisation of labour leader Ajaero.

However, the strike, which commenced on Tuesday, recorded partial compliance in states across the federation.

According to reports, workers in Rivers, Kwara, Bauchi, Zamfara and Lagos state partially complied with the strike action.

Also, partial observance was recorded in Anambra, Ondo, Kaduna, Borno, and Ogun states, as some banks and government offices were open. In contrast, workers did not report at work in others.

The NLC and the TUC declared the strike to protest the alleged brutalisation of the NLC president during a workers‘ protest in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1.

Checks revealed that banks across Lagos, government, and private-owned schools did not obey the strike directive. Also, business owners and parastatals carried on with their activities throughout Tuesday.

Reports further detailed that some schools in Lagos, including Omole Grammar School, Olusosun Primary Health Centre, Oregun, and Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital and all were open for services. Banks in Lagos also opened their doors to customers.

However, lecturers failed to show-up in classrooms at the University of Lagos after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) directed its members to join the industrial action.

On its part, the Lagos State University, Ojo, did not participate in the strike as it continued with its ongoing examinations.

Ajaero, who was reportedly brutalised by state-sponsored thugs accompanied by the Imo Police command, was in the state to join the protest of the Imo chapter of the NLC against the unfair treatment of the union by the Hope Uzodimma-led Imo government.

However, hours into the protest, men alleged to be members of the Nigeria Police force brutalised and whisked the NLC president away.
