The spokesperson of the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, has debunked claims suggesting that elections did not take place in some areas at the ongoing governorship election in Imo state.

Media reports had suggested that the election did not take place in some areas of Imo state following the sit-at-home order issued by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The report suggested that INEC officials, security personnel, and electorates were absent at PU007, Iheme ward, Ideato local government area of Imo State due to the enforced sit-at-home order by the IPOB terror group.

However, debunking the claim while speaking with a Naija News reporter in a telephone interview, Okoye said the report was untrue, suggesting that the election is currently occurring in all designated polling units across the state.

Reiterating that there is no sit-at-home order in the state, the police spokesman urged the public to disregard the report, suggesting it was geared towards misleading Nigerians.

“That is not true. So far, I can confirm that election is ongoing in the state’s 27 local government areas; there is no sit-at-home order anywhere,” he said.

His comment hours after an election monitoring Civil Society Organization, Situation Room, said there was a low voter turnout in Imo State. The organisation also detailed that its observers recorded a low-security presence in Imo compared to Kogi and Bayelsa, where the off-cycle governorship election is held simultaneously.
