Amnesty International Renews Call For Investigation Into Ajaero’s Attack As NLC Prepares To Shutdown Nation

Rights group, Amnesty International has renewed its call for the President Bola Tinubu-led government to investigate the recent attack on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), Joe Ajaero.

Making this call in the wake of plans by the labour union to shutdown the nation, Amnesty International wrote, “Amnesty International again call on the Nigerian authorities to investigate the violent attack by the police and Imo state government on the leader of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Joe Ajaero.”

The rights organisation’s renewed call comes just after the labour union shutdown activities in Imo state, threatening to shutdown the nation if its demands are unmet.

Naija News recalls that the NLC president was brutalized by men alleged to have been sent by the Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma, during the NLC protest in Imo.

While the police denied involvement in the act, suggesting that they only took the union’s president into preventive custody, the Imo state governor tagged the accusation as attempts to hamper his chances at the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Already, all flights to Owerri, Imo State, from airports across Nigeria have been blacklisted by the unions in the aviation industry.

The action follows a joint directive by the Labour Union, which consists of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), in response to the brutalisation of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, in Owerri last week.
