A stern warning has been issued to police officers in the country, especially in Delta State, over the arrest of improperly dressed citizens.

According to the Delta State Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, police officers have no right to arrest people wearing dreadlocks, men wearing earrings, or women wearing bum shorts or mini-skirts.

He said none of these dress codes was an offense; therefore, police officers neither have any rights to arrest them nor directives.

Naija News reports that Edafe, who took to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday to make this stand, said there had been a lot of complaints by citizens, especially in Delta State, about the police harassing people improperly dressed.

He said, “I have been getting complaints that members of the public, particularly residents in Delta State, are being harassed sometimes by vigilantes, anti-cult, hunters association, and some recalcitrant police officers.

“I want to make it very clear that on the issue of dress code, improper dressing, boys carrying dreadlocks, wearing earrings, girls wearing bum shorts or mini-skirts or girls going out without bra; it is not an offence.

“That circular was debunked by the state government, hence, no policeman or vigilante or anti-cult or anybody can harass you for that. If they insist that it is an offence, you also should insist that the matter should be taken to a police station, and when you get to a police station, reach out to me.

“However, I really want you to know that it is not an offence.”
