The Director General of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Dr Abbas Idriss, has confirmed the collapse of a storey building in Lagos Street, in the Garki District of Abuja, which happened late Wednesday night.

Naija News reported that many people were trapped in the rubble as people made efforts to rescue them.

Confirming the incident, Idris, in a terse statement on Thursday morning, said 37 persons had so far been rescued at the scene of the collapsed structure.

He said the victims have been evacuated to various medical facilities in Abuja.

The FERMA boss, however, noted that the rescue mission was slow as people on the ground adopted manual efforts due to the delay in the arrival of the excavator.

According to Idris, two of the rescued people are fatally injured.

“Thirty-seven persons have so far been rescued and evacuated to hospital, others reportedly still trapped. The rescue team and others are on the ground. Rescue operations are on but slowly due to ongoing rain,” the FERMA boss confirmed.

They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble”, he added while commending the efforts of all stakeholders working hard manually to rescue trapped persons, including members of the community.

He revealed that the rescue mission continues while they await the arrival of equipment to enhance the operations.
