The Lionesses of England have beaten the co-hosts of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Australia, in the semi-finals of the tournament earlier today, August 16.

The 3-1 victory at the Stadium Australia was enough to take England to their first Women’s World Cup final.

Interestingly, England who have played in two semi-finals before today’s game will face Spain who are also debutants in the Women’s World Cup final.

Recall that Spain beat Sweden 2-1 on Tuesday to book their place in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final which will take place at Stadium Australia at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 20.

In the second semi-finals earlier today, Australia were expected to hold their own against England who knocked out the Super Falcons in the round of 16 via penalties. But they couldn’t do much against the Lionesses who played without their top scorer Lauren James who concluded her two-match suspension today.

Ella Toone scored the opener for England in the 36th minute, but Australia got back in the 63rd-minute courtesy of Sam Kerr’s strike.

Unfortunately, the co-hosts couldn’t hold off the sharp attacks from the Lionesses as Lauren Hemp restored England’s lead in the 71st minute. Arsenal’s Alessia Russo sealed the victory for the Lionesses in the 86th minute.

Australia will now have to beat Sweden in the third-place match at 9:00 on Saturday, August 19, to finish the tournament with a third-place medal.
